South Asian Ensemble: North Indian Tabla Drum Ensemble, MUS 177

This class teaches the art of playing North Indian drums called Tabla. Students get to learn hands-on various techniques of playing the drums along with complex rhythmic patterns associated with Indian classical music. Along with covering the foundation sounds of tabla, students also learn the complex meter cycles which are called Tala, and learn various compositions which can be used for performing in recitals. Students have access to drums for learning and practicing provided by the Music Department and do not require any prior experience in tabla to join the class.
