About

The Improvisatory Ensemble: Jazz Combo is a chamber group focusing on small-group jazz repertoire and improvisation. Rehearsals include demonstrations of practical exercises to develop an idiomatic jazz vocabulary, discussion of applicable jazz history, exercises in jazz arranging, and development of repertoire. The group performs three concerts each year with the Jazz Ensemble. Additionally, the Jazz Combo often performs for campus events, events around Riverside, and has traveled to Ensenada, Mexico, to perform for the city's 133rd anniversary.

Auditions for the Jazz Ensemble are held once yearly, on the first Tuesday of the fall quarter, and are preceded by an informational meeting which occurs on Thursday of Week 0. Participation is not restricted to music majors and is open to students of any and all majors who pass their audition.
