A lecture-recital of original music by Peruvian-Spanish pianist and composer Mónica Cardenas, featuring both the composer and Eileen Holt, flute, in performance.
Mónica Cárdenas (Peru-Spain) was born in Lima, Peru, where she also began her studies at the National Conservatory of Music. She then won a scholarship for graduate studies at the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiev with Prof. A. Saderatzkaya and the Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow with Prof. V. Natanson. Her chamber-music education started in Munich with musicians of the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra. Her talent for chamber music soon led her to perform concerts and make recordings with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, as well as with other musicians of international standing. She is the cofounder of the Cardenas Trio, with whom she has performed in concerts for more than two decades. Among the recordings of the Trio is the CD Labyrinth, on which they interpret classical music of Brazilian composers such as Villa-Lobos, Nazareth, Mignone. As a composer, she writes works in a contemporary classical genre as well as world music. Her works have been performed throughout the U.S., Europe, and Latin America. In the domain of world music, she has composed Latin jazz with Afro-Peruvian rhythms as a tribute to her grandfather, the pianist and composer Filomeno Ormeño. In 2015, she recorded the CD Anikousto, which includes her composition Festejo en Sueños, a three-movement piece in Sonata form for flute and piano.
