The new UCR Percussion Ensemble, directed by GRAMMY-nominated Justin DeHart, was created for students to learn and perform contemporary percussion music. Students will gain essential training and experience performing percussion chamber music using mallet instruments, drums, timpani, accessories, and ethnic instruments. Repertoire is drawn from important 20th century composers (Varese, Cage, Reich, Chavez, Cowell), contemporary composers (in the experimental, minimalism, avant-garde, electronic, and pop crossover styles), world music and improvisation. The ensemble often collaborates with UCR composers and other multidisciplinary artists in the community.
Committed students from all over campus are encouraged to enroll. It is not mandatory to be a music major or an undergraduate. The class meets Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters on Mondays 10:10a-1p in ARTS 157. The ensemble will have the opportunity to perform multiple times during the year inside and outside of campus, culminating in an evening concert in the Spring.
